What counts as self-care?

What counts as self-care? - www.nourishmeblog.co.uk

As we wave goodbye to colder weather, I always find it harder to think about self care. I'm sure we've all seen *that* viral tweet about self care not always being about $20 face masks and LUSH bath bombs, but the idea of self-care and taking time out to be selfish in a positive way has only really gained a lot of strength in the last couple of years. And it's still very mainstream, aka treating yoself to a bath bomb being self-care. Everything is all pretty much based around the hygge ideal: cosying up in soft blankets with an organic face mask, hot cocoa, fairy lights and a film. But that doesn't really work in summer, and I'm so glad to see a whole lot of people questioning this now.

Self-care is important. It's about loving yourself and respecting yourself and treating yourself as if you're worthy of your own time and effort (because you are). Self care is about doing things that remind yourself that you're fab and that you're worthy of love and support and all things good.

Sometimes for me self care is sitting in a steamy AF bath, de-clogging my pores with a face mask and reading a fab book. And that's completely valid. Sometimes self care is cancelling plans because you're having a bad time with your mental health. Sometimes it's making plans because you need to get out of the house.

Self care is making your bed, or leaving it unmade if you like it. It's removing yourself from toxic situations. It's eating what you want, and remembering to slot in water and veggies. It's opening the windows to get in fresh air. It's showering and washing your hair and cleaning your clothes. It's daily and it's on special occasions. Self care is celebrating things you've done and minor achievements.

Self-care is whatever you do to take care of yourself, whatever that means. It's something to work on and to strive for. Self-care can be hard, especially when you're feeling low and miserable, but it's always worth it.

LOVE this! I recently took some time off work because depression was kicking my butt - that, imo, was self-care. Totally agree with you - self-care is anything you do to care for yourself. Whatever that might be. x www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

    1. That definitely counts as self care, and I'm glad you took the time off and didn't just push yourself too far

  2. IMO self-care definitely isnt lush bath bombs and face masks, for me it's things like going to bed early, reading blog posts, going out with my mom because she puts me at ease... it really is hard to specifically say what counts as self-care!x

    1. Sometimes an early night is exactly what you need, and I think that's what self-care is all about, doing things that you need to do and that help to encourage self-love
