New Lockdown Book Haul!

Colourful books with their spines facing up

Pretty much all I've done over the last year is read and go for walks in all types of weather. My shelves are heaving with all the new reads I've picked up after being swayed by the internet, and I'm just truly deeply in love with reading again. Admittedly these are my lockdown 1 book buys that I've been meaning to talk about for MONTHS but somewhere between the reading, walking and doing literally nothing, I've dropped the ball on this. They're all books I'm really excited about, and I can't wait to read them all (I've made my way through a couple so far!).

COvers of With the Fire on High, Rich People Problems and The Testaments

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

This YA contemporary fiction is a book I really enjoyed last year. The main character is 17-year-old Emoni, a single mum living with her grandmother who has a love for food. When the opportunity comes up to study culinary arts at her school, Emoni's faced with the decision to pursue her dreams, or take a more 'sensible' route through school.

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

The final instalment in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, this book moves away from previous main characters Rachel and Nick, and looks more at the side characters and the rest of Nick's family. With drama at its heart (as always in this series), the book is about Nick's grandmother's illness and death, and the family's obsession with what might happen with her will.

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

Thinking about it more, a dystopian fiction isn't the best vibe for a pandemic read, but I'm looking forward to reading Atwood's follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale. Set 15 years after the end of The Handmaid's Tale, it is told by Aunt Lydia, a character from the first book.

COvers of Natives and Remembered

Natives by Akala

A look at particularly British racism, and denial about the real situations that happen because of this in the UK, Natives confronts race and class at the heart of the legacy of the British Empire. Non-fiction is something I rarely dip into, but this is such an important read that I'm determined to read this part biographical, part political, wholly educational book soon.

Remembered by Yvonne Battle-Felton

Set in 1910 in Philadelphia, Remembered  looks at race and motherhood, and how the two intertwine. When Spring's son Edward crashes a car and ends up in hospital, she realises she must now tell him the story of their family history that she's been keeping a secret for so long.

Covers of Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and A Dance with Dragons

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid

When Evelyn Hugo, retired and reclusive Hollywood actress, decides to tell her life story at last, she picks Monique Grant, a fairly unknown journalist for the task. Monique's determined to do a good job to get her career on the up, but doesn't realise how enthralled or connected she'll become with Evelyn.

A Dance with Dragons I: Dreams and Dust - George R R Martin

It has been SO long since I read the previous book in the Game of Thrones series before this, and I really need to get on it. This is the first part of the final book in the series that has been published. This continues the stories of Jon Snow, Bran, Daenerys and Tyrion as well as a selection of other characters.

  1. I don't believe that I've heard of any of these books before! So it's great to get a little snippet of each of them! With The Fire on High sounds super interesting and intriguing
