Dealing with weight gain part nine: getting a desk job

Dealing with weight gain part nine: getting a desk job

Dealing with weight gain part nine: getting a desk job
In all honesty, when I initially decided I'd write this a few months back, I hoped that I'd be writing all about how good things have been for my weight gain, and how I felt a lot better about myself. But things have taken a different turn to my idealised version of events, and today I'm talking about the reality of things.

Two and a half months ago, I quit my job as a waitress, to work at my dream job. I've been loving it, and still having little 'omg pinch me' moments when I think about what I'm actually doing with my life. The one thing I was really apprehensive about was the structure of sitting at a desk for seven hours a day. I was used to spending all of my shifts rushing around on my feet, catering for other people.

But, I decided that this was my chance to stop eating restaurant food every day (I mean, there's got to be some perks to waitressing, right?!), and lessen my food intake to match my more sedentary lifestyle. And yes, things have evened out. But in reality, I was hoping I'd start to see a little bit of my weight gain shift, and it didn't happen.

However, do you know what? I'm happier than I've been in the longest time. I walk to and from work every day, which gives me that extra pump of Vitamin D I need to get going in the morning. It also really helps me to get to sleep at night. My body's so used to being active and on my feet, that without doing this, my sleep would be awful.

And yes, I snack and eat junk food, and have a little Saturday night takeout ritual. But do you know what? Life's too short to spend it making yourself feel rubbish about the fact that you went all treat yo self and ordered Dominoes.

Getting a desk job has made me healthier in so many ways. I'm not eating out every day. I'm making my own lunches and dinners every single day. I'm not always exhausted because I've been rushing around all day. I get my evenings back and have a set routine. My mental health is more stable. I have more time for family and friends. And yes, I haven't lost any weight, but do you know what? I'm totally okay with that.

  2. This post is spot on. I work 8-5 at a desk and sometimes I worry about the fact that I'm sat on my bum all day, but the fact that I enjoy my job and I have a nice routine makes it worthwhile! Swings and roundabouts, as they say!

    1. I think it's really hard to stay in a positive mentality about it, but sometimes it's so important to recognise what's really making you happy more than anything
