How do I know what the right university subject for me is?
Sometimes it feels like forever since I left uni, and sometimes it feels like just last week that I was moving into halls for the first time. University is such a massive change in your life, and it's terrifying to make all the decisions you need to: where to go, what to do, how to do it.
Today I'm going to try and avoid getting all Grandmother Willow on you all, but honestly, listening to your heart is a big part of making choices that are right for you IMO. With that aside, let's get realistic. You need to do something you're good at. However, it doesn't necessarily have to be your highest scoring subject. If you're getting all A*s in Maths, but want to pursue Physics with a B, you go do that.
There's no point spending three years studying something that you don't love. Whatever you do, there'll be moments when you just hate what you're doing because of extreme stress and mounting deadlines. BUT, if it's a subject you're really passionate about, those moments will be rare, and will be way overbalanced by times when you're so happy to be studying something you enjoy. Although I studied English Lit at uni, I actually scored higher in my History A-Level. I've never really regretted going for the subject that I knew deep down was right for me.
It's really tough to think about what you want to do with your future (I 100% still struggle with this now), but if you've got an inkling, then do a subject that will benefit it. If you want to be a farmer, go and do countryside management, and fuck what other people want you to do. If you don't know, then it might be best to avoid vocational subjects. I went for English because I was convinced I wanted to go into the publishing industry and that was the only route there. Now that I'm working in the industry (eek), I can see how English helped me, but it definitely wasn't the only subject that could've gotten me there.
It really feels like choosing your subject is the be all and end all of life. It's really not. There are so many things to do. You can do combined courses. You can take modules from another course, providing that you get permission from your personal tutor. It's also totally okay to recognise that you hate your subject, withdraw and reapply for a new subject for the next year. It's a completely valid option and I honestly have no idea why it's not talked about more. You don't have to continue doing something you hate.
All in all, I think this is a decision that's really pressurised by schools, parents and the media. We all know that people advocate STEM subjects, and if that's what you want to do, then go for it. But remember, that it's not anyone else who'll be sitting exams or going to lectures. Study something you feel passionate about, and that you really want to pursue. And if you don't feel that way about any subjects? Maybe consider some alternative options to University. Don't make yourself miserable for someone else's gain.

I agree with you. I have these struggles too atm. The best decision is to follow your gut instinct. We all know what we want, but we have a pressure from the environment and somehow we lost ourselves. Xx

I think following your gut is, as you said, the best way forward. It tells you what you want to do, regardless of other people
